Bigmouth Strikes Again

Here is a charming self portrait I took today with my brand new Canon EOS 5D, which I took delivery of today. Full-sized sensor, 12.8 megapixels, stunning image quality, even at 3200 ISO, I'm delighted. For all you who don't speak Photodork, it's a very nice camera and I'm very excited about it.

Here I go again

I'm headed off for Santa Fe today, to see my friend Ben's gallery opening featuring his work in Southeast Asia after the tsunami struck. Hard-hitting stuff, but very good. I'll also be stopping by Los Alamos to see my folks. Have a great weekend.

Ice fishing for sewer crocs, anyone?

This morning when I woke up it was -14ºC (6ºF) outside. My apartment is situated on top of a largely empty space and is not optimized for cold, so it gets a little chilly and I can't leave the heat on too high because the gas bill goes up too fast. I rose up from bed and made tracks for the shower to warm my blood. I found ice on the shower hose and when I turned it on, it took a minute for the hot water to melt through the thin layer of ice on the showerhead itself. I decided to use the time to empty my bladder. I did not have my contacts or glasses on so my vision was pretty blurry. I became concerned when I heard the sound of liquid splashing off something solid, thinking my aim was not true and I'd have a mess to clean. Then I realized that there was a layer of ice on top of the toilet water and I was melting it. That's a true story; it's cold here.

Another shake-up at the paper

Today the announcement was made that Media News, the former owner of the Daily Times, has taken back a controlling share of the paper. Gannett will retain a 40 percent share, but will be silent. What does this mean? So far, no one is totally sure. We'll just have to wait it out and see.
