I covered two games today; one for our paper and one for our sister paper the Deming Headlight. Both were winners, so that means more coverage tomorrow. The game is not until 20:00 tomorrow, so until then I get to enjoy some time in the 'big city' of Albuquerque and in my Presidential Jacuzzi Suite. Yes, you read right. I guess the girl at the front desk thought I was more important than I am when I pulled out my laptop and started working in the lobby after she told me my room was not ready, so she bumped me up to the top tier at no charge. King-size bed, two rooms (I just noticed that each of them have a television) and, as the name implies, a jacuzzi. That's in addition to the normal bathroom. Although 'presidential' isn't quite 'royal', it's close enough for me, so a little Crown Royal on the rocks, turn the dimmer switch just high enough that the bulbs don't buzz and I'll be King of this Several Square Meters. I'm not one to take advantage of the handouts offered to journalists, I don't even take soft drinks offered me by high school athletic directors, but I didn't ask for this, I was simply handed a key with this room number on it. When I saw the name on the door I tested if the key worked and walked to the front desk to ask if I was in the right room and if the price* they told me still applied. "Yes" on both accounts, so I can rest easy on that giant mattress. I guess one could say I've been on something of a lucky streak lately (refer to post on the last poker night) I'd better hit Vegas before it runs cold ;).
In Non-Gloating-About-Undeserved-Good-Fortune news, I met a couple photographers today whom I had known only by name before. One was Ellis Neel from Alamogordo, whom I knew simply because he contributes so dadgummed much to the Associated Press, and Roberto Rosales from the Albuquerque Journal, who actually knew who I was and knew my work. It's pretty cool to find out that people are actually taking notice of what you do, even if you live in a hostile-to-human-reason anti-oasis like...Farmington.
* Although the cost of this room will go on my expense report, I still negotiated a reduced-rate when I reserved.
